According to the latest Heal the Bay report, Surfrider Beach is the 4th most polluted beach in all of California. Topanga State Beach is the 10th most polluted beach in all of California. Pretty sad...

TERRY MARTIN DIES AT 74; LEGENDARY SHAPER
Over a nearly six-decade career, Martin is said to have shaped more surfboards than anyone — some 80,000 — although the exact number is unknowable. Martin himself once said he stopped counting after 50,000. Martin, 74, died May 12 at his home in Capistrano Beach after a battle with melanoma. His death was announced by the Hobie Surf Shop in Dana Point, where he worked off and on for 40 years.

RALLY TO SAVE MALIBU LAGOON
More than 100 demonstrators turn out with signs and banners to protest the proposed plan to restore Malibu Lagoon State Park. Wetlands activists have filed an appeal in San Francisco Superior Court hoping to overturn a court decision allowing the bulldozing of Malibu Lagoon, a decision many believe does not comply with state law.

BILL WOULD KEEP CONTROVERSIAL 'NO-OTTER ZONE'
A bill backed by House Republicans would stall plans to let sea otters reclaim their historical range off Southern California because of concerns that the threatened marine mammals would compromise commercial fishing and military training operations.

LARRY STEVENSON, SURF GUIDE PUBLISHER AND SKATEBOARD INNOVATOR, DIES AT 81
Larry Stevenson, a Venice Beach lifeguard who helped popularize skateboarding in the early 1960s by marketing his Makaha boards to riders eager to essentially surf on land, has died. He was 81. Stevenson, who had Parkinson's disease, died Sunday at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, said his son, Curt. "He was the guy who said, 'I can merge surfing with the skateboard culture,'" said Michael Brooke, author of the 1999 skateboarding history "The Concrete Wave." "At one point in time, there was nobody bigger making skateboards."

GRAY WHALE SWIMS FREE FROM FISHING NET
A California gray whale found tangled in a fishing net off the Orange County coast swam free after a lengthy rescue over the weekend. Whale-watching boats spotted the young cetacean stranded outside Dana Point Harbor with about 50 feet of netting and rope wrapped around its fluke, or tail.

KITE SURFER DIES AT TOPANGA STATE BEACH
A 28-year-old Los Angeles kite surfer who died after being pulled unconscious from the ocean off Topanga State Beach has been identified. The Los Angeles County coroner's office says Dante Torres of the San Fernando Valley was pronounced dead at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center. An autopsy will determine the cause of death. Sheriff's investigators say a lifeguard at the county beach east of Malibu was watching Torres and another kite surfer Monday evening when Torres hit the water. His rig went airborne but Torres stayed down.

U.S. TO CUT FUNDS FOR WATER TESTING AT BEACHES
Health testing at beaches in California is at risk of being cut under a plan to eliminate federal funds for monitoring whether the water is too contaminated to swim in. Citing the "difficult financial climate," the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in its budget request this week that it would do away with $10 million in grants it gives each year to state and local agencies in coastal and Great Lakes states to test for tainted water.

SEAN COLLINS, SURFLINE FOUNDER, PASSES AWAY AT 59
Sean Collins, an avid surfer and entrepreneur whose self-taught ability to forecast ocean swells changed the way surfers worldwide chase the perfect wave, died Monday after suffering a heart attack while playing tennis in Newport Beach. He was 59. The longtime Seal Beach resident was a founder of Surfline.com, the Huntington Beach company that employs a proprietary prediction methodology to forecast global surfing conditions weeks in advance.
