DEAD DOLPHINS AND SEA LIONS ALONG COAST
Two dead dolphins that washed up on the shores of Newport Beach on Sunday appear to have died from domoic acid, a poison that can be deadly to large sea mammals and birds. Mike Teague, animal control officer for Newport Beach, said experts at the Natural History Museum are also reporting that dead dolphins have also washed up in Los Angeles County.

DOLPHINS DIE AFTER UNDERWATER NAVY TRAINING EXERCISE
Three dolphins died this month during a Navy training exercise using underwater explosives near the San Diego County coast, authorities said Friday. Scientists have yet to officially determine what caused the deaths at the Silver Strand Training Complex near Coronado, but examinations of the animals showed injuries consistent with blast trauma.

LEROY GRANNIS PASSES AWAY AT AGE 93
LeRoy Grannis, a noted photographer whose widely printed images captured and popularized the surf culture of California as it exploded in the 1960s and '70s, has died. He was 93. Grannis, who also co-founded what is now Surfing magazine, died Thursday of natural causes at a Torrance nursing facility, said his son John.

RIZZO WORKING AT THE INTERNATIONAL SURFING MUSEUM
Robert Rizzo, the former Bell city administrator, who is accused of misappropriating public funds, is working as a parking lot attendant at the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach.

CONSTRUCTION SHACK ON PCH DEMOLISHED
A long-abandoned construction shed along Pacific Coast Highway that had been turned into a home by a transient was bulldozed by a Los Angeles Recreation and Parks crew on Tuesday morning, near the mouth of Potrero Canyon. Thus ended the homesteading by Tachowa ('Rollerball') Covington, following months of complaints by Pacific Palisades residents that the shack was an eyesore. Their next goal is to have the City remove the adjacent water tank, where Covington has also been living.

WORK TO BEGIN ON PCH SEWER PROJECT
In mid-December, the City of Los Angeles will begin construction of a 4,500-foot Coastal Interceptor Relief Sewer that will increase capacity of the existing sewer and is intended to keep dry-water runoff from draining into Santa Monica Bay. About 3,100 feet of the sewer will be built on Pacific Coast Highway between Annenberg Community Beach House and the Will Rogers State Beach's parking lot (across from Potrero Canyon) and 1,400 feet in the parking lots for Will Rogers and Santa Monica Beach Club.

PETITION TO SAVE ACCESS TO MOTHER'S BEACH
A development next to Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey will take over the primary parking lot for the beach and threatens access to paddlers, rowers, kayakers, and all the community boating groups that depend on the beach. Please sign the petition to prevent the rezoning of the lot.

SHARK ATTACK AT SURF BEACH IN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
A 19-year-old man was fatally attacked by a shark while body-boarding at Surf Beach, one hour north of Jalama Beach, in Santa Barbara County on Friday morning. The victim was a 20-year-old UC Santa Barbara student who was body boarding when the shark bit his leg off.
